Mecillinam is an broad spectrum penicillin antibiotic which binds specifically to penicillin binding protein and interfers with the biosynthesis of cell wall. Mecillinam binds specifically to penicillin binding protein 2 (PBP2).
Mecillinam has good antibacterial activity on Gram-negative bacteria, including E. coli, klebsiella, Enterobacter, Citrobacter, Shigella, and Salmonella and so on. Mecillinam's activity against gram-positive bacteria is weak.
