Cefaclor is a semi-synthetic beta-lactam antibiotic in the cephalosporin group that are effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Like other beta lactams, it works by disrupting cell wall synthesis in non-resistant cells by inhibiting cross-linkage of peptidoglycans in the cell wall and activating autolysins that lead to further degradation.
Cefaclor, like the penicillins, binds to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, it inhibits the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Cell lysis is then mediated by bacterial cell wall autolytic enzymes such as autolysins. It is possible that cefaclor interferes with an autolysin inhibitor.
