ABST diammonium salt is commonly used as a substrate in biochemical assays, enzymatic kinetics and ELISA experiments. ABST becomes green in color when converted to its monocationic radical (ABST+). This change can be monitored by spectrophotometric measurements at 405 nm.
Hydrogen peroxide often serves as the oxidizing agent for this color change. Indirectly monitoring hydrogen peroxide concentrations is beneficial due to its implications in the metabolism of free radicals.
