Thiostrepton is a natural cyclic oligopeptide antibiotic. Thiostrepton is derived from several strains of strepromycetes and is used as an antibiotic because of its ability to inhibit protein biosynthesis by binding to ribosomal RNA and one of its associated proteins.
Thiostrepton is active against both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. Thiostrepton is used as a reagent for both positive and negative selection of genes involved in nucleotide metabolism.
