Fosfomycin (also known as Phosphomycin or Phosphonomycin) is a phosphonic acid derivative antibiotic originally isolated from certain Streptomyces species. Fosfomycin can be re-merge as a new potential good candiate for antibiotic resistance if toxicity can be surpassed.
Fosfomycin inhibits bacterial cell wall biogenesis by inactivating the enzyme UDP-N-actetylglucosamine-3-enolpyruvyltransferase, also known as MurA. This enzyme catalyzes the committed step in peptidoglycan biosynthesis, namely the ligation of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) to the 3'-hydroxyl group of UDP-N-acetylglucosamine.
Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. gram-negative bacteria including Escherichia coli.
