Florfenicol is a fluorinated synthetic analog of thiamphenicol.
Florfenicol is a protein synthesis inhibitor, inhibiting peptidyl transferase activity of the bacterial ribosome, binding to A2451 and A2452 residues in the 23S rRNA of the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing peptide bond formation.
Florfenicol has a broad spectrum of activity against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria and is primarily bacteriostatic and is effective against many chloramphenicol-resistant strains of organisms like Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacae, Salmonella typhi and E. coli.
