Ciprofloxacin is a synthetic second-generation fluoroquinolone.
Fluoroquinolone antibiotics target bacterial DNA gyrase, an enzyme which reduces DNA strain during replication. Because DNA gyrase is required during DNA replication, subsequent DNA synthesis and cell division is inhibited.
