Cefotaxime is an inhibitor of bacterial cell wall synthesis. High activity against gram-negative bacteria. Very often used for the elimination of Agrobacterium species after inoculation. High resistance against B-lactamase activity. Nontoxic to plant cells.

Cefotaxime sodium salt, Ultrapure is the >99% pure Cefotaxime sodium salt specifically designed for plant cell culture applications. It does not contain any E-cefotaxime (a usually present but highly toxic isoform) and contains trace amounts of other contaminants. Cefotaxime is the third generation of cephalosporin against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, however unlike other third generation cephalosporins, Cefotaxime has no effect on the plastids of the highly developed vascular plants.
