Ampicillin is a penicillin-based semi-synthetic antibiotic very similar to amoxicillin. Like other penicillins, it works by breaking up the peptidoglycan links in cell walls of non-resistant bacteria which ultimately leads to cell lysing. Ampicillin has a broad spectrum against a wide range of bacteria including both gram-positive and gram-negative. An ampicillin resistance gene (abbreviated bla) is commonly used as a selectable marker in routine biotechnology.
Ampcillin works by binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall inhibiting the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Cell lysis is then mediated by bacterial cell wall autolytic enzymes such as autolysins; it is possible that ampicillin interferes with an autolysin inhibitor.
