Imidazole anitifungal agent that interferes with ergosterol synthsis. Alters the permeability of the cell membrane of sensitive fungi and yeasts. Plant cell culture tested.
Miconazole inhibits the growth of most fungi at 4 mg/L. Budding spp. and Histoplasma spp. are highly sensitive to it, Cryptococcus genus, Candida genus and spore ball genus are also sensitive to it.
Miconazole inhibits cytochrome P450-dependent 14α-demethylase, which is critical to ergosterol biosynthesis. The accumulated 14α-methylated sterols change the membrane structure of sensitive fungi, resulting in an altered cell membrane permeability. Miconazole inhibits peroxidases, which results in accumulation of peroxide within the cell.
