Mercury chloride can be used for radiation-damage-induced and anomalous phasing in protein crystallography.  Mercury chloride is often incorporated into the crystal lattice by soaking.  The results is known as a mercury derivative.  Mercury derivatives take advantage of a free cysteine present in many proteins.
