Chloramphenicol is a bacteriostatic agent against both gram negative and gram positive bacteria by entering cells by active transport. Within the cell it binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by preventing attachment of aminoacyl transfer RNA to its acceptor site on the ribosome, this preventing peptide bond formation by peptidyl transferase. It has a wide specturm of antibacterial activity, is relatively inexpensive and is suitable for insect culture media.
