In combination with 4-aminoantipyrine, 3,5-dichloro-2-hydroxybenzenesulfonic acid is used as a reagent for biochemical reactions producing peroxides. Production of hydrogen peroxide is quantified by the horseradish peroxidase-mediated conversion of 3,5-dichloro-2-hydroxybenzenesulfonic acid and 4-aminoantipyrine to a colored product. This principle is used for determination of uric acid in serum as uric acid is oxidized by oxygen in a reaction catalyzed by the enzyme uricase forming hydrogen peroxide.
