Itraconazole (R51211), invented in 1984, is a triazole antifungal agent prescribed to patients with fungal infections. The drug may be given orally or intravenously. Itraconazole is an insoluble triazole antifungal agent.

Itraconazole increases cell permeability by inhibiting enzymes involved in ergosterol synthesis. The increase of permeability has a toxic effect on the fungi and leads to cell death.

Itraconazole is commonly used in clinical in vitro microbiological antimicrobial susceptibility tests (panels, discs, and MIC strips) against fungal specimens. Medical microbiologists use AST results to recommend antifungal treatment options for infected patients. Representative MIC values include:
