Tween 20 is commonly used as a detergent with applications as a washing agent in immunoassays such as in western blotting and ELISAs. The reason is to help non-specific antibody interactions and used at concentrations of 0.05% to 0.5% v/v. Tween 20 is also used for cell lysis, protein extraction and to solubilize membrane proteins.

Tween 20 at elevated temperatures is not recommended including autoclaving.
