Herbimycin A is a benzoquinone ansamycin antibiotic produced by Streptomyces hygroscopicus. Herbimycin A was first identified as a herbicidal compound and has been found to have anti-tumor activity. Herbimycin is a Tyrosine kinase inhibitor, while the Tyrosine kinases are enzymes responsible for the activation of signal transduction cascades.
Herbimycin is a benzoquinone ansamycin antibiotic that binds to Hsp90 (Heat Shock Protein 90) and alters its function. HSP90 client proteins play important roles in the regulation of the cell cycle, cell growth, cell survival, apoptosis, angiogenesis and oncogenesis.
